May 27-29, 2024 - Columbia and Franklin, TN

 We stayed at the campground on Memorial Day and rested, worked on the blog and started getting ready to move.


We left Tuesday and drove about 45 miles where we are staying at Campers RV Park in Columbia, TN.  About 4 miles from the RV park was an area with a lot of damage from what we thought must have been a tornado.   The gentleman who checked us in at the RV park told us there was a tornado in the area about 3 weeks ago.  One person died and 4 others were injured in this tornado.  We are so thankful we have avoided those kinds of devastating storms.


The RV Park is beautiful with a lot of green areas with Gazebos and chairs to sit and relax.  We are parked next to their bird sanctuary.  This is the view from the window by our table.  We enjoy listening to the birds singing.

Wednesday, we took Tacky to see Dr. DeCozio, who was our veterinarian for many years in Arizona.  She moved to Franklin, TN a few years ago.  We got the health certificate Tacky will need to cross the border into Canada and back to the US.  We also had to get him a new microchip as the US has changed rules for dogs entering back into the US starting August 1st.  Tacky’s current microchip is not IOS (International Organization for Standardization) compatible – so now he has two microchips in him in case he is ever lost.

We headed towards Flathead Lake Monday morning and stopped in Kalispell to get our air conditioner repaired. It had stopped working a couple of weeks ago and August is not the time to be without an air conditioner. The RV dealer we stopped at gave us the name of the guy who does their air conditioning work. He was able to fix the air conditioner (a switch had burned out) in a couple of hours and we were on our way. We drove to Polson, MT at the south end of Flathead Lake and are going to stay here for a few days. We are staying at Eagle Nest RV, which has a cherry orchard on one side, a golf course on one side and a horse pasture on another side. It is a really nice park with lots of grass and trees. Unfortunately, we are at the end of the cherry season and we might not be able to find any fresh cherries. Tuesday morning we decided to take a drive around Flathead Lake. We left Valdez this morning in rain and fog and retraced our route back up the Richardson Highway. We ran out of the fog and rain after we went over Thompson Pass and thought we would be able to see more of the scenery. Not to be, shortly we ran into more smoke. We stopped at the visitor center at Wrangell-St. Elias National Park but it was really smoky so we didn’t stay very long. The ranger there (we think he was a ranger but he looked about 15 years old!) told us that there are currently 60 fires in Alaska and the smoke here is from the fires North of here around Fairbanks. Wrangell-St. Elias National Park is the largest national park in the US at 13.2 million acres. There are only 2 short gravel roads in the park so access is limited to backpacking, hiking and flight seeing. The park is mainly wilderness and has 4 major mountain ranges in it and includes 9 of the 16 highest peaks in the US. Unfortunately, because of the smoke we were not able to see any of them. September 25-27, 2023 – Canyon, TX

  Monday, we drove into Canyon and went to the Chamber of Commerce where we got information on the area.   In the afternoon we to the Creek House Honey Farm where we couldn’t resist buying some chocolate honey.   We then went next door to the Honey Buzz Winery and had a delicious fruit and cheese tray while tasting their great mead and hard cider.   We bought some growlers of their excellent cherry mead and pear cider. Tuesday morning, we drove to Palo Duro Canyon State Park.  Palo Duro Canyon is approximately 120 miles long and 600 to 800 feet deep.  It is the second largest canyon in the US.  The State Park consists of 27,173 acres and the original park land was deeded by private owners in 1933.  The CCC worked in the park from 1933 to 1937 building the roads, visitor center, cabins, shelters, bridges, trails and the park headquarters.
