June 14-16, 2024, Fenelon Falls, Ontario



We left Niagara Falls on Friday morning and drove to our friends, Gunter and Susanne, home in Fenelon Falls, which is north of Toronto in a beautiful area with many lakes. We were able to park our motorhome in their neighbor’s driveway.





After we got settled in at their home, we took a short walk downtown and to Fenelon Falls and lock area.  The falls were beautiful.







The Fenelon River after it flows down the falls.  The river connects Cameron Lake to Sturgeon Lake.

We did a lot while in Fenelon Falls - bike riding, kayaking, hiking and a cruise in the Georgian Bay of Lake Huron.

We kayaked on the Burnt River up to Three Brothers Falls.






We were able to kayak under this old railroad bridge that is now being used as a bridge for automobiles.








Three Brothers Falls was beautiful – this picture is of the upper two falls.



        And the lower falls where we beached the kayaks.







Gunter, Susanne and Nancy getting ready for a picnic next to the lower falls.  This was a beautiful 12-kilometer roundtrip paddle. 






Nancy and Susanne took a walk downtown Fenelon Falls and to Cameron Lake where we saw this family of Mallard Ducks.






Nancy and Tacky relaxing in the shade and watching the water and ducks.  It is so nice to be able to walk downtown and to the lake and falls from their house.

We headed towards Flathead Lake Monday morning and stopped in Kalispell to get our air conditioner repaired. It had stopped working a couple of weeks ago and August is not the time to be without an air conditioner. The RV dealer we stopped at gave us the name of the guy who does their air conditioning work. He was able to fix the air conditioner (a switch had burned out) in a couple of hours and we were on our way. We drove to Polson, MT at the south end of Flathead Lake and are going to stay here for a few days. We are staying at Eagle Nest RV, which has a cherry orchard on one side, a golf course on one side and a horse pasture on another side. It is a really nice park with lots of grass and trees. Unfortunately, we are at the end of the cherry season and we might not be able to find any fresh cherries. Tuesday morning we decided to take a drive around Flathead Lake. This is a very scenic area with lots of fruit orchards. We found a fruit stand and bought cherries, peaches, tomatoes

June 22 - Delta Junction, AK Here we are at the end marker for the Alaska Highway (mile 1422). We also found some of those big Alaskan skeeters. We toured the Sullivan Roadhouse Historical Museum. The roadhouse, built in 1905, served travelers on the Valdez-Fairbanks Trail and is the oldest roadhouse in the interior of Alaska. The 371 mile trip from Valdez to Fairbanks could take up to 2 weeks by stage (sleigh in winter) and roadhouses were spaced a day’s travel apart. We drove South of Delta Junction and found an overlook where we could get a fairly good picture of the Alaska Range even though it was cloudy. We also toured Rika’s Roadhouse, which is in the Big Delta State Historical Park. The restored roadhouse was built in 1910 and also served travelers on the Valdez-Fairbanks Trail. Rika was from Sweden and worked for the owner who was away most of the time. He finally owed Rika so much in back wages that he deeded the property over to her. We left Valdez this morning in rain and fog and retraced our route back up the Richardson Highway. We ran out of the fog and rain after we went over Thompson Pass and thought we would be able to see more of the scenery. Not to be, shortly we ran into more smoke. We stopped at the visitor center at Wrangell-St. Elias National Park but it was really smoky so we didn’t stay very long. The ranger there (we think he was a ranger but he looked about 15 years old!) told us that there are currently 60 fires in Alaska and the smoke here is from the fires North of here around Fairbanks. Wrangell-St. Elias National Park is the largest national park in the US at 13.2 million acres. There are only 2 short gravel roads in the park so access is limited to backpacking, hiking and flight seeing. The park is mainly wilderness and has 4 major mountain ranges in it and includes 9 of the 16 highest peaks in the US. Unfortunately, because of the smoke we were not able to see any of them.
