July 19, 2024 – Bonavista Peninsula, Eastern Newfoundland Coast

Friday morning, we drove to Trinity where we had a 3-hour Ocean Safari Adventure booked with Trinity Eco Tours.  It was very foggy in Trinity Bay, and we were not optimistic about our chances of seeing whales.  Upon arrive, we were provided with these very stylish one-piece full-flotation suits to keep us safe and warm on our trip.

Our zodiac-style boat - we straddled the seats like sitting in a saddle.  We were advised that we would get wet.

The fog got worse as we left the harbor.

The tall cliffs along the shore were beautiful in the fog.

The fog cleared a little and we could see bald eagles sitting in the trees.

This bald eagle was sitting on the rocks.

The fog got denser, and you could barely see the coast.  The ride did get rough as we went farther from the bay – and we did get wet!

Another bald eagle through the fog.

Some of our group spotted the fin of a fin whale but it was far off, and we lost it before we could get close.

We were very fortunate to see this beautiful Steller’s sea eagle that has been calling North America home for the past three years, having veered off course somewhere along the way from its home in Russia and Japan.  There are only about 4,000 left in the wild and it is the only one of its kind here in the western hemisphere.

The Steller’s sea eagle is approximately 25 percent larger than a bald eagle. It also has a distinct larger beak which is bright orange to yellow in color.

The fog had cleared in Trinity Bay as we came back to the dock but it was still cloudy.   We really enjoyed our cruise and were very excited to see the Steller’s sea eagle but disappointed we did not get to see whales.

We stopped for lunch at the Dock Marina.  After lunch we drove up the hill to Sweet Rock Ice Cream where we ate our ice cream while overlooking Trinity Bay.

The fog was clearing, and we enjoyed the view of this lighthouse with the fog in the background.

We had another great day and were so glad we were able to see the Steller’s sea eagle.
