July 18, 2024 – Bonavista Peninsula, Eastern Newfoundland Coast
Thursday morning, we started our tour of the Bonavista Peninsula – when John Cabot landed on the northern tip of the peninsula his first words were ‘Oh buono vista!’ or ‘Oh happy site’. We totally agree – the coast is breathtaking.
We stopped at the Cape Bonavista
Lighthouse Provincial Historic Site. The
lighthouse was built in 1843 and is one of the most photographed places in the
province. Unfortunately, they were
painting the lighthouse, and we were not able to tour it.
Across from the lighthouse we were able to see a few puffins on the rocks.
The puffins are nesting among the
rocks.
We next stopped at Dungeon Provincial Park – the dungeon is a collapsed sea cave know as a gloup and has its origin as a cavern with two separate openings to the sea. Continuing erosion led to the widening of the cavern until eventually the roof collapsed inwards. Rock material was slowly removed from the collapse by wave action. The surrounding coastline is in a constant state of change due to erosion from waves, storms, winds and tides.
We never tire of seeing the beautiful coast.
