June 1 - June 30, 2017 – Chama, NM (cont.)

We are continuing to enjoy working at Rio Chama RV Park – Nancy is learning more about the office and Rex and the other outside crew are mowing – a big job here keeping everything mowed and trimmed!

Rex spent some time renovating this railroad baggage car for the park owner, Russ.

Rex enjoyed working on this project and the cart certainly looks better now!

Rex rode the Cumbres and Toltec Scenic Railroad for the first time this year on June 9th.  He wanted to make sure the dizziness from his head injury in March would not interfere with his being a docent on the train.  His ride went well and he will work as a docent on his days off from the park when they need him.

We love all the big cottonwood trees in the park except for this time of year when all the cotton is flying – sometimes it looks like it is snowing and there are small piles of snow on the side of the roads!  It is also playing havoc with Nancy’s allergies.  The mosquitos have also arrived and we are glad we have the screen room so we can sit outside without getting bitten too much.  Rex uses the screen room to play his guitar at night.

On June 21st the first black bear of the season was sighted in the park at 6 am – it was behind the RVs that are across the street from us.  It was back in the park the next morning as we found a big pile of scat on the path we take to the dog park.  Consequently, everyone in the park must take in their bird feeders at night so we don’t encourage the bears to continue to stop in the park.  They usually come through the park on their way to town to raid trash cans - the park locks down the dumpsters at night so the bears can’t get into them.
We attended a Friends of the Cumbres and Toltec Scenic Railroad dinner and meeting held at the Senior Center.  The next evening we attended the Fill the Bowl Dinner – a fund raiser for the Humane Society also held at the Senior Center.  We had a delicious dinner of lasagna, salad, bread with cupcakes and ice cream for dessert.  All the food was prepared and served by volunteers from the community.  We each received a beautiful handmade ceramic bowl.  They even had beautiful kittens that were ready for adoption – we didn’t think the dogs would appreciate a kitten in the house so we didn’t bring one home.
The park has really started to fill up and it is keeping us both very busy – it is basically booked full for the months of July and August.  We are leaving on July 1st to spend time in Colorado and visit family.  We will return the end of July and continue working until the park closes in October.
