June 25-30, Traveling to Newfoundland

After returning from Algonquin Provincial Park, we spent Tuesday and Wednesday at Gunter and Susanne’s getting ready for our trip to Newfoundland.  Again, we thank Gunter and Susanne for their hospitality.

Thursday morning the caravan to Newfoundland got started.

We drove across central Ontario to just before the Quebec border.  Ontario is a beautiful province, and we enjoyed our trip.  We spent the night at Voyageur Provincial Park which is east of Ottawa and on the Ottawa River.  We spent a pleasant night in this beautiful park.

Friday morning, we drove into Quebec and to Quebec City where we stayed at Camping de la Joie.  To reach the campground we had to drive through Quebec City.  It was Friday afternoon of a holiday weekend, July 1st is Canada Day, and the traffic was horrendous, but we made it safe and sound.

Saturday morning, we took a shuttle into old Quebec City which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the only walled city north of Mexico.  We first took a bus tour of the city on a double decker, open top bus.

We drove by the Parliament Building.

The Chateau Frontenac.

It started raining just as our bus tour ended.  We ate lunch at La Buchette and the French onion soup was great.

After lunch we walked along some of the streets that were paved with 400-year-old cobblestones.  We especially liked this street with the hanging umbrellas.  Pretty convenient as it was raining!

Another cobblestone street with banners overhead.

Rex and Gunter took an early shuttle back to the campground to take care of the dogs and cat while Nancy and Susanne continued walking around town.  We climbed this staircase with 398 steps.  Once we got to the top, we decided we deserved an ice cream cone!

One of the gates in the wall surrounding the city.

Some of the quaint old buildings we saw.  We enjoyed our visit to Old Quebec City even though it rained all day.

Sunday morning, we left Quebec City and were thankful that the traffic was very light.  We drove down the the St. Lawrence River a short distance and then turned south to New Brunswick.  We continued across New Brunswick and stopped in Mirimichi where we stayed at friends of Gunter and Susanne, Burt and Jennifer.  The trip was beautiful, but it did rain all day and we received tornado warnings on our cell phones.  Thankfully, we did not run into a tornado.   Burt and Jennifer treated us to a great dinner and a delicious breakfast, and we thank them for their great hospitality.  Sunday evening, we were treated to a beautiful sunset.
