August 5-6, 2023 – Shoshoni, WY
Saturday morning it was overcast but not raining so we drove to Castle Gardens Rock Art Site. The site is about 40 miles southeast of Shoshoni on mostly gravel roads. With all the rains we have had, the roads were muddy but easily drivable. There was a hiking trail that led us to the petroglyphs.
Castle Gardens contains what is commonly known as Plains Indian Rock Art. The face of the stone was wet with a hide which softened the surface. The rock was then smoothed out with a flat rock and a sharp bone was used to incise the rock with designs. The petroglyph was then decorated with a paintbrush.
The rock art here dates between 1300 and 1550 A.D.
This was a beautiful site seemingly in the middle of nowhere. We are really glad that the rain let up long enough for us to make the trip. We drove to Riverton and found a carwash to get the mud off the Jeep.
Saturday night we had another
thunderstorm and more rain. Sunday was
another rainy day – it has rained every day since we arrived in Shoshoni. We will leave tomorrow and drive to
Thermopolis, hopefully, we will have sunshine there.
