August 14-15, 2023 – Greybull, WY
We left Thermopolis late Monday morning for the about 80-mile drive North to Greybull. We are staying at the Green Oasis Campground, a very small campground with nice shady and grassy sites.
We can tell we are at a lower elevation as it is a lot hotter here. The forecast for the week is in the mid to high 90s - we are so glad we have a shady site.
There is a flood control berm between us and the Greybull River. A nice concrete walking/biking path runs along the top of the berm so we will be able to take nice long walks in the evening.
After getting set up we drove into Greybull to the visitor’s
center which closed 15 minutes before we got there. We walked along main street and found Queen
Bee Gardens, a honey and chocolate store.
We bought some Dark Chocolate Honeymoon Patties, Mountain Peach Whipped
Wildflower Honey, and Chokecherry Whipped Wildflower Honey.
After dinner we took Tacky for a two mile walk on the path. The trail was very quiet with only a couple other people walking dogs or riding bicycles. The evenings do cool off, so the walk was very enjoyable.
Tuesday, we went to the visitor’s center and got some great information about things to see and scenic drives. We then went to The Museum of Flight and Aerial Firefighting just outside of Greybull. When an aerial firefighting business closed in 2004 these planes were what was left of the business.
We were able to see inside one of the
airplanes.
Many WWII bombers were converted into aerial
firefighting planes and used to fight forest fires.
This was a very small but informative museum.
We took another nice walk this evening, this time we
walked about 3 miles.
