August 29 – September 13, 2014 – Chama, New Mexico

We left Capulin Friday morning and drove west through Raton, Cimarron Canyon, over the Rio Grande Gorge Bridge and on to Chama.  It is great to be back in the Rocky Mountains with all the beautiful scenery.  We are staying at the Rio Chama RV Park where we have been staying for the past 15 years when we are in Chama and will be here through the end of September.  It is nice to see our Chama friends again.

Rex is again volunteering as a Docent on the Cumbres and Toltec Scenic Railroad.  He is also the docent coordinator for the month of September.   As the coordinator he oversees the other docents and coordinates the docent schedule.  He also is in charge of the docent office – opening it every morning and the locking up after the train leaves the station.  He again unlocks the office in the afternoon before the train returns and makes sure the docent sound system equipment is taken off the train and is secured in the docent office.  He then makes sure the docent office and the museum car are both locked for the night.   Between the docent coordinator duties and being a docent on the train two to three times a week he is keeping very busy.

Nancy is again volunteering at the display of “Chama in Miniature” in the Cumbres Mall downtown.  This display has an S scale model of the Chama rail yard as it looked in the 1950’s.  They also sell t-shirts, hats, calendars and other train souvenirs.  She walks the dogs down to the train station most mornings to watch the train leave and meet Rex after he is finished with the docent coordinator duties for the morning.  They also walk down to the train station in the afternoon to meet the returning train and meet up with Rex after he is finished for the day.  It is a nice ¼ mile walk from the RV park and we all get a little exercise.  We have seen quite a few deer both in the RV park and on the way to the train station.  The park has had some bear problems over the summer but we have not had any bears in the park since we arrived.
