May 1-3, 2010 - Prescott, AZ

We left Apache Junction on May 1st and drove to Prescott. It was a very pretty drive from Wickenburg to Prescott through the Weaver Mountains. We are staying at the Yavapai County RV Park at the Yavapai County Fairgrounds complex, which is just outside of the town of Prescott Valley. It is a very nice complex and has a dirt motorcycle race track and a dirt stockcar race track. When we arrived Saturday afternoon there was a motorcycle race in progress. That race ended while we were eating dinner and shortly after that a stock car race started. The motorcycle race was not too loud but the stock car race was really loud and lasted until 11 pm. Sunday morning most of the racers and race fans left the campground and it has been very quiet.

We walked around downtown Prescott which has a nice old courthouse surrounded by a small park with several statues and an historical timeline etched into the sidewalk. Prescott was once the capital of the Arizona Territory and is currently the seat of Yavapai County.

Fort Whipple was founded in 1864 as a US cavalry fort during the Indian wars. It was later a tubercular hospital and currently serves as a Veterans Hospital.

Granite Dells is an area outside Prescott that has unusual granite boulder formations. We stopped at Watson Lake Recreational Area in Granite Dells.

Notice the snow on the peaks in the background. The peaks are by Flagstaff where they had record snowfalls this winter.
