April, 2012 – Apache Junction, AZ

Our neighbors are continuing to leave and the park is getting a lot emptier.   Nancy’s parents joined us for a very nice Easter dinner in the park hall.   We had about 80 people at the dinner and we all had a great time with lots of delicious food. We enjoyed more kayaking trips on the Salt River in April.    We saw a lot more wildlife including herons, wild horses, bald eagles, turkey vultures, turtles and cormorants.   The pincushion cactus we have in a pot in front of our 5 th wheel started blooming again. It bloomed in October shortly after we arrived.    It has beautiful pink blooms. We left Apache Junction on April 26 th and followed Nancy’s parents to Benson, AZ.   On the way to Benson, Nancy’s dad blew a tire on his 5 th wheel.   We were glad we were following them so   Rex could helped change the tire.   We enjoyed 3 days of bluegrass music i...

March 2012 – Apache Junction, AZ

March was nice and warm - in the 80’s most of the month and even hit the low 90’s toward the end of the month.  On the 18 th it was cool and rainy all day and we even had snow on the Superstition Mountains. We helped with the March pancake breakfast in the park. This was the last breakfast for this year and we served around 160 people.  Nancy’s parents and her sister, Susan, who was visiting for a few days, joined us for the breakfast.  We have enjoyed helping with the pancake breakfast this year (even though we have to be there at 6 am!) and look forward to helping again next year. Nancy’s sister, Susan, from Colorado visited for a few days.  She stayed at our parent’s house but Nancy got to visit with her a couple of times.  We hadn’t seen Susan for a couple of year so it was nice to see her again. Our granddaughter, Mariah, and Nancy’s sister, Carol, flew in from Colorado for a week visit.  Mariah stayed with us while Carol stayed at Nancy’s paren...

February 2012, Apache Junction, AZ

We kept busy in February with Tai Chi, Water Aerobics, and hiking. We also helped with the February Pancake Breakfast – Nancy helped cooked scrambled eggs and Rex helped cook bacon and sausage.   We served over 230 people at this breakfast.   The Dolly Steamboat started getting busier as more snowbirds arrived in the Valley of the Sun so Rex has been working more days.   The weather was great this month – mostly in the 70’s. We went to the 22 nd Annual Heard Museum World Championship Hoop Dance Contest and watched the last day of the competition.   Hoop Dancing is Native dancing using from one to as many as 50 hoops.   The hoop or circle is symbolic to all Native people.   It represents the Circle of Life and the continuous cycle of summer and winter, day and night, male and female. The best Hoop Dancers from the US and Canada participate in this competition.   We were able to watch dancers from the Youth Division (6-12 yrs), the Teen Division, th...
